Description

The WaterAid Professor Urs von Gunten, Chair in Residence, Curtin  Water Quality Research Centre will present an overview of past and current problems in urban water management and how they were tackled.

Traditionally, the development of urban water management systems was driven by the reduction to pressing issues such as urban sanitation,  nutrients, eutrophication and toxic chemicals. In industrialised  countries, any of these problems have been solved by a sophisticated system of drinking water treatment followed by distribution and wastewater collection followed by treatment and release into receiving water bodies.

However, how robust are these systems for new challenges such as water reuse, climate change, emerging contaminants and nutrient recovery?

Based on the problems of emerging contaminants,  this seminar will illustrate some of the current challenges in the water sector.
