Growing concern over the incidents of widespread human exposure to arsenic (As) has been seriously noticed during last two decades. The exposure of As is currently associated with increased incidents of cancer and other public health hazards. The occurrence of As (mostly inorganic forms) in groundwater are often found in several part of the world including economically developed countries like USA, EU and Australia. However, the situation in Southeast Asia is critical where As-enriched groundwater is posing a serious threat to the community drinking water supply.
The distribution pattern of As concentrations in the Ganges Delta region is heterogeneous and there are numerous As hotspots in Bengal. In this work, we examine how field work combined with laboratory observation gives us useful information on the importance of hydrogeochemical characteristics (e.g. groundwater flow and recharge) of an aquifer in the release of As to groundwater. Our study site is located along the Hooghly River, 60 km north of Kolkata City, West Bengal, India.
